About this event

Indigenous History, Culture, and Creativity in Virginia

Speaking of… brings engaging voices and fresh perspectives to the Fine Arts Museum of Gloucester through a series of talks and conversations exploring art, history, culture, and ideas.

Raven and Christopher Custalow of the Mattaponi Tribe and owners of of Eastern People’s Indigenous Collective (EPIC) will explore the rich Indigenous heritage of Virginia’s Middle Peninsula, with special attention to the Gloucester area and the Native peoples whose histories are deeply connected to its rivers, waterways, and lands.

Through historical accounts, cultural traditions, and artistic expression, this presentation considers how Indigenous knowledge, creativity, and identity have shaped the region—and how Native communities continue to preserve and reinterpret their heritage today.

Come curious. The conversation starts here.
