The Community Captains program has celebrated local student leaders by highlighting work in college readiness, research, and creative activities—such as a study trip to Uganda.

Since its start in 2018, the program’s events have expanded to include more schools and honored student achievements, including a December 2024 celebration.

Christopher Newport University is expanding community engaged learning classes that allow students to work with local groups (e.g., the Newport News Green Foundation), apply course material to real-world challenges, and prepare for professional roles.

Students from Christopher Newport University joined the annual Captains in the Capital event at the State Capitol today, where they attended legislative sessions and met lawmakers.

They also took part in criminal justice reform, social work advocacy and undergraduate research programs to gain hands-on experience in the lawmaking process.

Three Christopher Newport University professors — Dr. Sherman Lee, Dr. Timothy Pressley, and Dr. Tarek Abdel-Fattah — have been ranked among the world’s top 2% scholars by a Stanford study based on their publication and citation records.
