ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A 21-year-old Marine was declared dead on Feb. 10 after a 72‑hour search began when he fell overboard from the Norfolk‑based USS Iwo Jima on Feb. 7, with rescue efforts involving multiple Navy ships and aircraft.  WTKR

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Newport News Public Schools students raised over $21,000 for United Way of the Virginia Peninsula during a student celebration at Crittenden Middle School on February 12. The fundraising effort featured school-wide sales and activities designed to build community support.  Newport News Public Schools
  • NNPS released a draft calendar for the 2026-2027 school year that meets state requirements with 178 student days and a two-week Winter Break from Dec. 21. The School Calendar Committee (teachers, staff, and parents) invites community input for further planning.  Newport News Public Schools

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health experts have warned that colorectal cancer is rising in the region and affecting more adults under 50 with worse outcomes if not detected early; Sentara will host its annual Don’t Sit on Colon Cancer 5K next month—residents can also opt in for free screening kits via their health insurance.  13News Now
