Newport News Public Schools will host its first annual Social Studies Symposium on April 18 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Gildersleeve Middle School, featuring lectures, an exhibit hall and a student art contest centered on America at 250 (the founding anniversary of the United States).

U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon toured Newport News Shipbuilding Apprentice School on Friday to see students' work as she prepared for a commencement speech today at the graduation ceremony.

McMahon + Congresswoman Jen Kiggans joined the visit to spotlight local shipbuilding and manufacturing jobs.

Demolition of Sherwood Shopping Center — long vacant along Warwick Boulevard — will begin in coming weeks to clear the site for a new $40 million public library serving Denbigh.

Construction will start in May with completion expected by summer 2028.
