COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, the United Jewish Community of Virginia Peninsula has partnered with THRIVE Peninsula to provide free kosher Passover items for Jewish families in need — THRIVE’s food pantry now offers a dedicated Passover section. Families in Newport News, Hampton, and York County can book appointments to pick up items — donations are welcome until April 2 as THRIVE expects to serve about 1,000 families this month.  13News Now
  • The Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore said it will lose $1.5 million in federal funds—money they planned to use to build a new facility and buy fresh food from local farmers. The cuts to federal support, SNAP, and WIC will hurt families and local agriculture and may delay planned food access efforts.  13News Now

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Newport News police responded just before 8 p.m. Tuesday when 69-year-old Anthony Johnson was fatally struck at the intersection of Ivy Farms Road and Jefferson Avenue—officers noted the driver remained on scene as the Crash Team continues its investigation.  13News Now

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Dollar Tree said it will sell Family Dollar for $1 billion to private equity firms Brigade Capital Management + Macellum Capital Management after struggling to make the chain work since its 2015 purchase. The deal is expected to close later in the second quarter, and Family Dollar will keep its headquarters in Chesapeake.  13News Now

  • A Senate hearing over leaked battle plans left out climate change from its list of national threats—raising concerns for military personnel and bases in Hampton Roads. Senator Angus King questioned why the annual threat assessment did not include climate change, even as Pentagon studies noted rising sea levels at bases like Norfolk that now require costly adaptations.  WAVY
