Thrive Peninsula’s Market in Newport News has joined with the United Jewish Community of the Virginia Peninsula to open a Kosher for Passover section at its food pantry—designed to help local Jewish families shop for needed foods before Passover begins on April 12.

The pantry aims to offer access to culturally appropriate foods amid rising grocery costs.

Today, Christopher Newport University held a Community Walk as President William Kelly led city officials, School Board members, alumni and students on a walk from campus through local neighborhoods to Gildersleeve Middle School—Captain Chris, the university mascot, received a warm welcome from Principal Roland Noel. The event highlighted the university’s effort to build ties with local residents and show students the opportunities available in our community.

VDOT reported eight pedestrian fatalities in Hampton Roads during the first three months—including one in Newport News near Ivy Farms Road and Jefferson Avenue—and experts urged pedestrians to follow road rules such as using sidewalks and wearing bright clothing.

Dominion Energy filed a proposal with the Virginia State Corporation Commission to raise residential base rates and add a new fuel rate, citing higher costs for labor, materials and power generation; if approved, customers will face an $8.51 increase in 2026 plus a $2 increase in 2027 and a $10.92 monthly fuel rate rise starting July 1. This proposal marks the company’s first base rate change since 1992 and also introduces a rate class for high energy users with a 14-year commitment.

Gov. Glenn Youngkin signed a law that requires all schools in Virginia to develop a cardiac emergency response plan covering emergencies and athletic events—each school must hold an annual drill, and the law will go into effect on July 1.

Lawmakers from both parties support Gov. Youngkin’s proposed changes to a bill that limits social media time for minors under 16 unless their parents allow more time — the proposal would raise the age to all minors under 18 and let parents control what their children see online.

If the Assembly approves the changes today, the law will go into effect on January 1, 2026, and if not, the bill will return to the governor — parts of the measure may face legal challenges.

Trader Joe’s recalled its Hot Honey Mustard Dressing after Fresh Creative Foods announced on March 30 that the label did not mention peanuts, soy, sesame, or wheat — a mistake that led the company to advise customers in Virginia and North Carolina to throw away or return the product with its May 27 use-by date for a refund.
