EDUCATION NEWS

  • Several local school divisions will close or use remote learning on Tuesday, Apr. 21 for a redistricting election because many school buildings will serve as polling sites. Newport News Public Schools will operate virtually while divisions in Hampton, Norfolk, Portsmouth and Virginia Beach adjust schedules (ensuring safety and continued learning).  13News Now
  • Christopher Newport University announced it will end its 50-year sailing program after this season due to declining participation and costly boat maintenance. Student-athletes, including team captain Noah Hubbard, will finish the season strong, marking the close of a long-standing tradition (the final competition will soon be held).  13News Now
  • Greenwood Elementary second graders were delighted when their book-inspired drawings turned into painted ceiling tiles at the school library on March 24. Woodside High students led the artistic transformation (the project is in its third year) and built community ties through creative education.  Newport News Public Schools

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger signed Alyssa's Law on Thursday, allowing teachers to carry a wearable panic alarm that alerts 911 during emergencies — a measure that also supports optional mental health training and internet safety lessons for students. School boards can choose to permit the alarms and related safety measures.  WTKR

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Blended families in Newport News should review their estate plans carefully because relying on a will alone or outdated beneficiary designations can cause conflicts.
