COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Riverside Health partnered with THRIVE to create a community garden for The Market on Nettles Drive that supplies fresh produce to underserved communities — volunteers met on Thursday at noon to start planting seeds using the garden’s self-watering design.  WAVY

BUSINESS NEWS

  • TowneBank will merge with Old Point and OPNB to form a bank with $19.5 billion in assets, $13.1 billion in loans, and $16.3 billion in deposits. Old Point shareholders can choose $41 per share or 1.14 shares of TowneBank, and the deal will close in the second half of 2025 pending final approvals—company boards have already backed the move—.  13News Now

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • askHRgreen.org and The Recycling Partnership will launch a three-year project called Feet on the Street to improve recycling quality by surveying 32,000 households in Newport News and other local areas—residents will soon receive educational stickers, updated signage, and targeted communications to reduce recycling contamination.  WAVY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Newport News is launching a survey in two parts to gather feedback for the 2025-2030 Strategic Plan. Four thousand households will be mailed a paper invitation on April 15—all residents can take part when the survey opens on May 5.  WTKR
  • The Nansemond Indian Nation filed a lawsuit against Virginia and several top officials, including Governor Glenn Youngkin, saying the state stopped Medicaid payments and treated its Fishing Point Healthcare centers unfairly. The tribe asked for full reimbursement and to end practices that sent patients to lower-quality care providers — a suit that follows a federal audit in November 2024 — and will seek changes in court.  WTKR
  • Starting May 7, Virginia residents must show a REAL ID or other approved ID to fly domestically and enter secure federal sites because driver’s licenses without the REAL ID mark will have federal limits. To get a REAL ID, applicants must bring proof of identity, legal presence, a Social Security document, and two proofs of Virginia residency and pay a $10 fee at the DMV.  13News Now
