COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Friday Night Nets will return to Newport News as part of the mayor’s Youth T.H.R.I.V.E. Initiative—this free program will offer sports, games, free food, and haircuts for all ages. The event will run every Friday night from May 16 through Aug. 22 at the Denbigh Community Center and the An Achievable Dream Tennis Center, with youth sessions from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and adult sessions from 8:30 p.m. to 11 p.m.  WAVY

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Thursday night, a two-vehicle crash on Water Street in Yorktown killed a 21-year-old man and a 34-year-old pregnant woman when a Dodge Challenger swerved and hit a Honda Fit — a 28-year-old Fit driver suffered a leg laceration and was released while 22-year-old Hunter Arnold was treated at Riverside Hospital and faces pending charges.  WAVY

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Virginia Peninsula Chamber will host the Military/Business Career Fair at the Newport News Marriott on May 20 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. The event will feature 80 companies and is free for job seekers — attendees should wear business casual attire.  13News Now

CRIME NEWS

  • Newport News police are asking the public for help to locate Marrio Ashlock, 35, a suspect in a bank robbery at BayPort Credit Union on Friday—he was last seen on Huntington Avenue and is described as 5-feet, 8 inches tall with short, curly hair, sideburns and a goatee while wearing a black shirt with pink writing and blue jeans.  WAVY

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A report by Insurify says new tariffs on auto, steel and aluminum parts may raise full-coverage car insurance prices by 19% by the end of 2025. In Virginia, drivers could face an extra $300 a year as insurers seek rate increases from regulators.  13News Now
  • After tariffs caused a drop in the stock market, Kevin Zywna—president of Wealthway Financial Advisors—told investors to put more money in their retirement accounts since cheaper shares now can lead to bigger gains later. He said people should stay calm and not make quick financial decisions.  WTKR

HEALTH NEWS

  • Hampton Roads health leaders have seen a rise in syphilis cases and the Norfolk Department of Health is urging locals to get tested to avoid serious health problems. They will hold a free public forum at Old Dominion University—3 to 5 p.m. on April 29—to explain treatment and rapid testing options.  WAVY
  • On Thursday, T.W. Garner Food Company recalled bottles of two Texas Pete sauces over labeling mistakes that may expose consumers to undeclared sulfites—posing a risk of severe allergic reactions—with products shipped to 10 states including Virginia.  WAVY

  • Data from Realtor.com showed that pending home sales in the Virginia Beach market dropped 14.2% in March—experts say federal layoffs and job uncertainty made buyers delay or cancel plans. This trend may signal a slowdown in the local housing market.  WAVY
