CRIME NEWS

  • Since launching its cold case team in May 2024, Newport News Police solved two cases and expect more arrests soon as they review files including details from the 1993 homicide of Lee Nguyen at Lee’s Restaurant near the shipyard — a development that offers families long-awaited answers.  WTKR
  • A new report from Newport News made recommendations to reduce domestic violence fatalities in the city. The Domestic Violence Fatality Review Report found that 234 homicides—21% of all—and officials plan to improve training, education, and support while working with schools to help prevent future deaths.  WAVY
  • On April 3, Yorktown police reported that 22-year-old Hunter Nelson Arnold faces two felony homicide charges—as well as DUI and reckless driving charges—after his vehicle lost control on Water Street, striking another car and killing 21-year-old James Leslie Steward and 34-year-old pregnant Abigail Pedroza Navarro while injuring a driver and himself.  WAVY

CULTURE NEWS

  • Newport News hosted filming of Food Network's 'The Great Food Truck Race' at Victory Landing Park Tuesday afternoon from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.—the show marked its second day in the city after food trucks parked at Port Warwick on Monday.  WTKR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Defense Commissary Agency announced on April 8 that the pilot program letting DoD civilian employees shop at selected commissaries in Hampton Roads has been extended until Dec. 31. The change allows shopping at stores on Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story, Naval Base Norfolk, Naval Air Station Oceana and the Norfolk Naval Ship Yard in Portsmouth.  WAVY
  • Civic Match, a nonprofit launched in November 2024 to aid laid-off federal workers, is now working with over 7,300 workers—more than 800 of them in Virginia—to match them with new job opportunities by creating quick online profiles and partnering with local governments.   WAVY

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Late last week, tariffs at the Port of Virginia raised recession risks and realtor economist Ryan Price urged home buyers to get preapproval and plan for the long run — advising that waiting for a lower mortgage rate may not work. He added that home prices are climbing but may slow over the year as federal cuts take effect — which could change the spring buying boost in the region.  WAVY
