  • A Newport News woman is giving away prom dresses and suits to students to ensure everyone has an outfit for prom—she will host the event on April 12 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Kiln Creek Rec Center.  WTKR

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A former Sentara employee filed a lawsuit alleging unpaid overtime wages and meal break violations after working as a respiratory therapist and administrative associate at three local hospitals from October 2021 until February 2025. The suit claims that mandatory thirty minute meal breaks and a rounding policy that limits clock in and out times have reduced pay for patient care workers—claims that led her legal team to request a jury trial.  WTKR

CULTURE NEWS

  • Battleship Wisconsin, one of the largest battleships in U.S. history, will turn 81 on April 16 while Nauticus hosts a celebration on April 12 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Community members can tour the ship and preview a new NCIS room—an event that highlights its storied past and future plans.  WAVY

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The SS United States built in Newport News is being cleaned of fuel and chemicals before it will be sunk as the world's largest artificial reef off Florida's Gulf Coast. County officials and dive businesses plan to sink the nearly 1,000-foot ship by the end of this year—hoping to boost tourism and create a new dive site near Panama City Beach.  13News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Newport News uses BuildingBlocks software to inspect unregistered rental properties—an effort that started in 2016 to help inspectors check that houses meet code. City officials say the program has uncovered hundreds of substandard homes in the southeastern part of the city, protecting tenant safety.  13News Now
