  • The Armed Services YMCA offers free or low-cost programs for active-duty military families, including Operation Little Learners (a twice-weekly program for children serving over 400 participants at 17 locations) as part of the Give Local 757 event starting May 6. Donations help pay for educational supplies and military spouse salaries.  13News Now

CRIME NEWS

  • Zelia Spruce, 74, was arrested in Newport News after police found her 92-year-old mother's body in a home near the Magruder neighborhood and charged her with concealing a dead body, forging public records, and improperly obtaining DMV documents — police are still investigating the death.  WTKR

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Federal education officials have ended the $1B school mental health grants from a bipartisan gun violence bill signed in 2022, saying the funds did not support mental health needs. Virginia education advocates warn that schools, including those in Hampton Roads, will face challenges as they finalize next year's budget.  13News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Glenn Youngkin signed Virginia's budget bill into law on May 2 with bonuses for teachers, state employees, and nearly $1 billion in rebate checks — though he vetoed 37 items worth about $900 million that would have funded college and university projects. He said the vetoes would save money if federal actions lower tax revenue — Senate Majority Leader Scott Surovell called the cuts disappointing.  WAVY
  • The Virginia Department of Transportation will close one interior lane in each direction on I-64 at the J. Clyde Morris Boulevard overpass by exit 258 and near Hampton Roads Center Parkway beginning Monday until early 2026 for the Hampton Roads Express Lanes project. Drivers should slow down in work zones and obey posted signs during overnight ramp closures from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.  WAVY
