Newport News’ first community violence prevention manager, Synethia White, was appointed on Nov.

14 and brings 20 years of public service experience—she is building local partnerships to support youth, families, and victims as part of ongoing efforts to reduce violence. City leaders hope her work with community organizations and first responders will strengthen safety and lower crime in the area.

The Hampton Division of Fire and Rescue will debut a new unit to handle mental health crises in partnership with the Community Services Board and Sentara Health—its CARES Team will pair a behavioral health clinician with an emergency responder and operate weekdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with hours set to expand based on data and community need.
