- ➤ More than a dozen families at The Villages of Stoney Run had car windows smashed last weekend—nearly 20 vehicles were broken into, and the Newport News Police Department is investigating as management works with residents to boost security. WTKR
- ➤ Newport News Police say 23-year-old Kane Daniel Phillips has been found safe after he was reported missing on May 13 at about 3:50 a.m. from the 3100 block of Huntington Avenue—his disappearance raised concerns for his health and safety. WTKR
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The Virginia Opera said a $25,000 federal grant from the National Endowment for the Arts meant to support its production of Loving v. Virginia was withdrawn on May 8—citing shifts in agency priorities—and the organization now faces a funding gap it must fill before its fiscal year ends in June. WAVY
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Newport News Public Schools awarded 42 Teachers of the Year and announced three division-wide honorees on May 13 at Marriott at City Center. Jenkins Elementary reading specialist Michelle Young was named both Elementary School Teacher of the Year and Division-wide Teacher of the Year (she has taught for 15 years), while teachers from Hines Middle and Menchville High were also recognized.
