CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Westside Elementary officials in Newport News learned Wednesday evening of a threat made by a student who has been identified and will face disciplinary action; local law enforcement conducted a wellness check at the student's residence (which confirmed no access to weapons) and increased patrol on campus to ensure safety. - ➤ Newport News police responded to a shooting on Charlotte Drive just before 2 a.m. on Thursday and found a man and a woman with gunshot wounds — both were taken to a local hospital and remain in stable condition as investigators continue their work. WAVY

- ➤ Virginia Stage Company announced its 2025/26 season at the historic Wells Theatre in Norfolk, which will open in September with a co-production of Ain’t Misbehavin’ and include a schedule of musicals, thrillers and holiday shows through April. - ➤ Busch Gardens celebrates 50 years today since it opened on May 16, 1975 and it changed our area by boosting local tourism and lowering homeowners' tax rates — turning a quiet town into a lively community. - ➤ Newport News Public Schools now offer every second grade student a free Learn to Swim program in partnership with local YMCA branches — the program gives students four 45-minute sessions to learn water safety and basic swimming skills. - ➤ Retired Naval Commander Erich P. Röetz was appointed as Commissioner of Council Service Territory 15 for Scouting America and will support 64,000 youth, 20,000 adults and 19 councils in southern Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and part of Georgia; he served as commissioner-elect for two years.
