- ➤ YWCA South Hampton Roads will host its 4th Annual Conference on R.E.S.T. at Norfolk State University on June 11th from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.—the event will honor local community leaders for advancing racial equity. Honorees include Delceno Miles, Vivian Oden, Kemba Smith and Virginia Organizing, with rising senior York-Page Seaton receiving the Racial Justice Scholarship—and keynote speaker Mikki Kendall focusing on the theme What About the Women? - ➤ Friday Night Nets, a free youth basketball program, returns to Newport News this summer at Denbigh Community Center and Achievable Dream Tennis Center. The event runs every Friday night until Aug. 22 with youth playing from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and adults from 8:30 p.m. to 11 p.m.—the program was started by Mayor Phillip Jones to keep kids out of trouble. - ➤ Newport News City Council approved a $1.2 billion operating budget for fiscal year 2026 that will keep property taxes at $1.18 per $100 of assessed value and allocate $10,000 grants each to local nonprofits such as SafeHaven Empowerment Center, Peninsula Pastoral Counseling Center, Not My Child Agency and The Achievable Dream Academy. The new budget takes effect July 1 and runs through June 30. 13News Now
- ➤ WAVY’s Navy Ship Salute this month features the USS Nitze, a guided missile destroyer that recently earned major technology upgrades and held a hostage drill aboard. Commanding Officer Joshua Tiley said the crew will use the new systems — costing $200 million in taxpayer funds — to boost ship defenses and readiness. WAVY
