  • AAA Tidewater forecasts that more than 1.23 million Virginians will make trips this Memorial Day weekend and advises drivers to avoid roads from noon until 9 p.m. and leave early—major routes will be very busy with travelers heading to Virginia Beach, the Outer Banks and Myrtle Beach.  WAVY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On May 16, second and third graders from Newport News elementary schools built wind-powered boats at Newsome Park Elementary School during the Engineering Design Challenge—an event that is part of the school division's STEM initiative. Dutrow Elementary School won first place while Kiln Creek and Palmer placed second and third.  Newport News Public Schools

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Army plans to move TRADOC from Fort Eustis in Newport News to Austin to form the new Army Transformation and Training Command—this change is part of a reorganization set by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. General Randy George said the move will help streamline functions—bringing together leaders and technical experts in fighting formations.  13News Now
