CRIME NEWS

  • Newport News police report a 42% drop in homicides and a 14% decrease in non-fatal shootings after Mayor Phillip Jones set a 15% gun violence reduction goal last year, with resources focused on neighborhoods like Marshall Courts (aided by community partnerships, ShotSpotter technology, and illegal gun recoveries).  WTKR
  • Two active Navy SEALs from SEAL Team Four are facing non-judicial punishment after they reportedly shared racist memes that included a slave image targeting a fellow sailor and led to reprimands for some leaders — a retired Navy SEAL said he finds the incident disturbing and expects leadership to meet soon to fix the issue.  WTKR
  • Deputies in the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office responded to a crash Tuesday on George Washington Memorial Highway that followed a road-rage incident and arrested 51-year-old James William Elder who hit another car and threw objects, and he now faces charges including felony hit-and-run, personal injury and misdemeanor aggressive-driving.  WAVY

  • Warwick High School’s team finished 7th in the National Ocean Sciences Bowl Finals held on Zoom May 17 and 18 after winning the Blue Crab Bowl on March 1 at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • AAA predicts that about 1.23 million Virginians will travel more than 50 miles for Memorial Day weekend—experts say that heavy traffic is expected today and Friday afternoon. The Virginia Department of Transportation will suspend temporary interstate lane closures and work zones from noon Friday through noon Tuesday—travelers can check VDOT’s 511 site for real-time congestion forecasts.  13News Now
