- ➤ Newport News police report a 42% drop in homicides and a 14% decrease in non-fatal shootings after Mayor Phillip Jones set a 15% gun violence reduction goal last year, with resources focused on neighborhoods like Marshall Courts (aided by community partnerships, ShotSpotter technology, and illegal gun recoveries). - ➤ Two active Navy SEALs from SEAL Team Four are facing non-judicial punishment after they reportedly shared racist memes that included a slave image targeting a fellow sailor and led to reprimands for some leaders — a retired Navy SEAL said he finds the incident disturbing and expects leadership to meet soon to fix the issue. - ➤ AAA predicts that about 1.23 million Virginians will travel more than 50 miles for Memorial Day weekend—experts say that heavy traffic is expected today and Friday afternoon.
