  • Rick Mulligan started the Veterans Care Project to deliver care packages, meals, and support to veterans in need across Hampton Roads. The nonprofit has served over 1,000 veterans and will host a Fourth of July cookout to bring local volunteers and businesses together — showing that a grassroots effort can make a lasting impact.  13News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Newport News Education Foundation held its annual Salute to Success Student Recognition Dinner on May 21 at Marriott at City Center to honor top NNPS students with scholarships and accolades. The event celebrated high achievers — including Christian Wennin, who received a $10,000 Wayne D. Lett Scholarship, and Angel Crawley, awarded a new $5,000 scholarship, both committing to teach in NNPS for three years after college.  Newport News Public Schools

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The U.S. Army announced that its Training and Doctrine Command headquarters will move from Fort Eustis to Austin, Texas while operations in Hampton Roads remain stable with nearly 1,000 workers employed there. Army leaders said further changes and the appointment of a new commanding general will be outlined on June 15 with additional updates from October to next summer—ensuring local operations continue without disruption.  13News Now

  • Legendary local football coach Tommy Reamon Sr. died Thursday morning at 73—he coached high school teams for 34 years in Newport News and mentored NFL players Michael Vick and Aaron Brooks.  13News Now
