- ➤ A Feeding America report shows that food insecurity in our region is growing, with one in eight people in southeast Virginia and one in six in Northeast North Carolina struggling to get food while one in five Virginia children and one in four North Carolina children are affected. Food bank leaders said rising costs and federal aid cutbacks—such as TEFAP reductions—leave many working families uncertain about their next steps. 13News Now
- ➤ On Friday, the last day of National Safe Boating week served as the unofficial kickoff to Memorial Day weekend, and Sea Tow advised boaters to wear lifejackets, use a sober skipper, and check the weather before heading out — noting that three out of four water fatalities involved a lack of lifejacket use. Boaters are urged to complete safety checks before spending time on the water this busy summer season. WAVY

Youngkin issued two flag orders on May 23 — one calling for Virginia and U.S. flags on state and local buildings to fly at half-staff from sunrise on Monday, May 26 until noon with the POW/MIA flag displayed on public buildings for Memorial Day, and a second ordering flags to be lowered at sunrise on Tuesday, May 27 in memory of Congressman Gerald E. - ➤ Virginia State Police are boosting patrols through Monday night this Memorial Day weekend as AAA projects that 45 million people will travel at least 50 miles from home—officials urge drivers to buckle up and drive sober to reduce serious crashes. 13News Now
