Across Hampton Roads, people paid respects on Memorial Day by honoring U.S. military members who died in service—Newport News hosted a remembrance at Victory Landing Park while other localities held parades and wreath-laying ceremonies.

The events united communities as they reflected on the sacrifices made for freedom.

Newport News police said a woman died late Sunday night after she suffered at least one gunshot wound near 27th Street and Wickham Avenue — authorities are now searching for a suspect.
