COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local woman Cindy Rosa opened Semi-It Market on Chestnut Avenue to bring fresh food closer to neighbors in a local food desert — the store offers a café and will add a community garden. The market will officially open on June 27 after receiving a $10,000 grant to support its launch.  WTKR

CRIME NEWS

  • Newport News Police responded Tuesday night on the 1200 block of 26th Street when an acquaintance accidentally shot a man; he was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries—police are investigating the incident—.  13News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Newport News Public Schools Community Relations and Web teams won eight national awards from the National School Public Relations Association last week — they earned four Awards of Excellence, three Awards of Merit and an Honorable Mention for work on their website, social media and news stories.  Newport News Public Schools
  • Menchville High School’s Air Force JROTC program was honored with the 2024–2025 Distinguished Unit Award with Merit on May 27—its instructor Chief Master Sgt. Christopher Rambali also received the Outstanding Instructor Award as the unit, which ranked in the top 25% worldwide, achieved high evaluation scores and extensive community service, earned cadets industry certifications and aviation scholarships.  Newport News Public Schools

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sailors on the USS Gettysburg will return to Naval Station Norfolk on Friday—after nearly eight months on duty with their strike group. The ship did training with NATO and combat operations in the Red Sea before coming home.  WAVY
  • Governor Glenn Youngkin ordered all flags to be lowered to half-staff at sunrise on Wednesday, June 4 until sunset to honor longtime judge and state delegate Jerrauld C. Jones, who died on May 31 (aged 70). He was the first African American law clerk for the Supreme Court of Virginia and served 14 years in the House of Delegates.  WAVY
