Newport News held its Gun Violence Prevention Walk despite rainy weather, with community members, city leaders & officers gathering indoors and outdoors to honor lives lost and work to keep youth safe this summer.

Police outlined plans to bolster future prevention efforts.

Newport News Public Schools will offer free meals for children and teens as part of the USDA Summer Food Service Program on a first-come basis at several community sites.

Service will begin Monday – Friday starting June 15 and pause on June 19 and July 3; meals must be eaten on site.

City Council approved a 7 p.m. curfew for unaccompanied minors at City Center on weekends, effective since Wednesday, June 10 and continuing every Friday and Saturday through the Fourth of July — local business managers support the move to reduce disruptive gatherings and keep the area family friendly.
