- ➤ Ty'Jae Watson, a 17-year-old Newport News teen, turned his life around after his gun charges were dropped and earned his GED through the YouthBuild program—he now holds a construction credential and has been accepted into a building maintenance program while working with an Army recruiter. The city-funded initiative has aided 165 at-risk youths since 2019 by offering trade skills for a fresh start. WTKR
- ➤ The Elizabeth River Trail Foundation announced it received a National Recreation Trail designation from the Department of the Interior on June 9—making it the first national trail in Hampton Roads that will boost local tourism and enhance community recreation. Hampton Roads Chamber

- ➤ Hampton police arrested Caleb Marquise Dillard, 23, from Newport News on Wednesday, June 11 after a February shooting at Lasalle Avenue and Mercury Boulevard left 25-year-old Patrick Hewett dead in a vehicle on the 400 block of Michigan Drive—Dillard now faces charges of second degree murder, aggravated malicious wounding, discharging a firearm near a dwelling and two counts of firearm use in a felony—. 13News Now

- ➤ On Wednesday, a judge heard motions in teacher Abby Zwerner’s lawsuit after the Newport News School Board was dismissed under sovereign immunity from the January 2023 incident. Three former officials, including ex-superintendent George Parker & ex-principal Brianna Newton, have sought summary judgment while Zwerner’s legal team argued a jury must decide if gross negligence occurred, with the civil trial set to move forward this fall. - ➤ Newport News Public Schools Youth Development Department awarded schools for showing strong core values during the past school year by giving out the new Vanguard Award and 2024-2025 STAND Awards on June 10. McIntosh Elementary School was the first to get the Vanguard Award while Hilton Elementary, Knollwood Meadows Elementary, Crittenden Middle and Woodside High School received the STAND Awards. - ➤ The Newport News Police Department held its annual Gun Violence Prevention Walk at City Center on Wednesday to raise awareness and honor those lost to gun violence. The event featured speakers, music, prayer, and poetry, and community members wore orange ribbons during Gun Violence Awareness Month — with Chief Steve Drew noting that the walk united people affected by the issue.
