  • Newport News officials have set aside thousands of bottles of water at Four Oaks Service Centers for homeless residents during the extreme heat wave — another shipment will arrive soon to help those without shelter. City officials also urge residents facing the heat to use designated facilities like Pearl Bailey and Main Street Libraries for relief.  13News Now

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A dump truck got stuck underneath an overpass on I-64 westbound near the Toano exit Tuesday afternoon at about 2:15 p.m. after leaving a median construction area with its cargo box upright, which clipped the overpass and bent its axle—State Police charged driver Steven Waddell of Newport News with reckless driving and took him to a hospital with minor injuries while the Virginia Department of Transportation set up a detour.  WAVY
  • Two men – Waverly Tillar and Tron Green – rescued three adults and a teen from a sinking boat yesterday near the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel, and firefighters said the survivors reached Huntington Park boat ramp at 10:09 a.m. with one person needing emergency treatment.  WAVY

  • Carol Ward received the C.T. Lucy Distinguished Service Award and Eather White was inducted into the Broadcast Advertising Hall of Fame at the 88th VAB Summer Convention. Local stations WAVY-TV-10, FOX43, and The CW Hampton Roads celebrated the awards for their commitment to excellence in Virginia broadcasting.  WAVY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Newport News Public Schools Attendance Department and Menchville High School won the 2025 Attendance Innovation Awards Grand Prize from EveryDay Labs on June 24 for a creative program that boosted student attendance by using a special soccer league for English learners + the award includes a $5,000 scholarship and $2,000 in gift cards to support attendance initiatives.  Newport News Public Schools

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • More than 1,500 Dominion Energy customers lost power around noon Tuesday in Hampton Roads — outages also affected Newport News, and the company expected power to be restored by 5 p.m.  WAVY

  • Newport News residents and business owners can apply to join a citizen advisory committee that will shape the vision for South Central Jefferson Avenue between Mercury Boulevard and J. Clyde Morris Boulevard—applications close on Saturday, June 28.  WTKR
  • The U.S. Coast Guard relieved the commanding officer of the Coast Guard Cutter Tampa Tuesday due to a loss of confidence in his ability to lead — Vice Adm. Nathan Moore made the decision and an investigation is ongoing.  WAVY
  • Virginia Passenger Rail Authority is adjusting Amtrak schedules to add up to 15 extra minutes for heat delays that slow train speeds on busy routes. The pilot program aims to set clear expectations for passengers — especially on trips like Norfolk to Washington.  WAVY
