COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Food Lion Feeds awarded over $1.1 million in grants to 264 organizations across 10 states, including food banks in Hampton Roads, to help fight hunger and teach meal planning. The foundation will accept grant applications until Sept. 18—awards will be announced in December as it aims to double its impact to 3 billion meals by 2032.  13News Now

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A five-year-old girl died Wednesday afternoon after a four-car crash on I-64 in Newport News, police said—a speeding driver lost control and the child's car seat failed to keep her safe.  WTKR

CRIME NEWS

  • Hampton police arrested Eric Fleet, a Newport News man, for a deadly hotel shooting on June 10 at Quality Inn on West Mercury Boulevard—police said he fatally shot 24-year-old Monica Rodriguez and injured another victim during an altercation.  13News Now
  • In May, inmate Austin Randall and visitor Amy Carmine faced drug trafficking charges after trying to smuggle drugs into Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail—both were arraigned on May 19 and remain held without bond until their next court appearance.  WAVY

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Dominion Energy is asking Newport News customers to use simple steps like raising thermostats and closing blinds to stay cool and lower bills this summer. The company’s Peak Time Rebate Program will give credits up to $1.25 per kilowatt hour saved and crews remain on standby—measures taken after last Friday's heat wave stressed the grid.  WTKR
  • A heat wave has raised energy bills in Newport News as air conditioners worked nonstop yesterday and are running hard today to beat high temperatures over 100 degrees, causing bills to average about $140 for households. Dominion Energy offers up to $300 in cooling assistance for those who need help and advises setting thermostats to 75—an effort to control rising costs during the ongoing heat wave.  13News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Some Warwick HOSA students from the Governor’s Health Sciences Academy earned a spot at the International Leadership Conference in Nashville after winning first place at the Virginia HOSA State Leadership Conference in March. They attended the event from June 18 to 21 and spent the week learning leadership skills and meeting health professionals—preparing for future careers in health.  Newport News Public Schools

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • During a heat wave, over 5,000 Dominion Energy customers lost power in Hampton Roads on Wednesday — including 3,000 in Virginia Beach. About 1,300 Newport News customers lost power with service expected between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m., and nearly 800 Portsmouth customers also faced outages — the outage is under investigation.  WAVY
