ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Fire crews rescued two people — an adult woman and a bystander — from the York River Monday night after strong currents swept them upriver near Gloucester Point; the woman was taken to a local hospital in stable condition. WAVY
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A Hampton man, 35-year-old Robert Benjamin Brown, was arrested during a traffic stop on July 7 after a K9 from the York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office detected cocaine and heroin in his vehicle — deputies also seized a firearm and charged him with multiple offenses. 13News Now
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Gas prices in Hampton Roads dropped as a Gas Buddy survey showed average prices in Virginia Beach fell 9.2 cents per gallon to $3.03 on Monday. Analyst Patrick De Haan said the recent price jump from Middle Eastern conflict eased — and if no major hurricanes hit, prices may continue to drop — as summer ends. WAVY
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Rising twelfth graders Teofilo Henderson-Saunders and Tationa Ward finished seventh in the national robotics competition in Nashville from June 27 to July 1 after earning third place at the state contest using their skills in the event. Their teacher Stephen Millner said they ranked in the top 2% of the nation and will compete again next year. Newport News Public Schools
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ A Lending Tree report shows that Virginia leads the nation in coastal flooding events and only about 3% of homeowners carry flood insurance—leaving many exposed during this hurricane season; Ian Blair of Wetlands Watch Policy explained that typical home insurance does not cover flood damage and urged residents to review their options. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Virginia’s combined sales tax holiday will run from August 1 — 3 and offer eligible hurricane preparedness items, clothing, school supplies and Energy Star and WaterSense products; lawmakers extended the holiday until July 1 — 2030. WAVY
- ➤ Governor Youngkin said his administration reached its goal of cutting 25% of regulations by removing outdated and duplicative rules, which saved $1.2 billion for businesses and people. He plans to cut another 10% of the rules before the end of the year. WAVY
- ➤ Officials hosted a tour of the USS Pasadena at Naval Station Norfolk where sailors and commanders explained the training and close teamwork aboard the 360-foot submarine—commissioned in February 1989—while young crew members gained hands-on experience in tight quarters. WAVY
