GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A new Virginia law now requires every public elementary and secondary school to have a cardiac emergency response plan in place — the plan uses national guidelines and updates previous rules on defibrillator use. The law comes after a fatal incident at Menchville High School in February 2024 and aims to boost student safety.  13News Now
  • Newport News officials announced that starting Aug. 1 the city will enforce a law regulating short-term rental properties such as Airbnb and Vrbo—owners must secure permits, obtain business licenses, and follow safety rules. Some operators fear the new rules may force them to cancel bookings, while council leaders say the measure will help keep neighborhoods safe.  WAVY

HEALTH NEWS

  • Sentara Health investigated two remote workers hired in January whose submitted photos did not match those seen during virtual meetings — the review found they performed lab orders from outside the country. The privacy incident affected patients who received lab tests through April 10 and may have exposed names, addresses, dates of birth, medical record numbers, lab tests, and Social Security numbers, with affected individuals receiving notification letters and credit monitoring offers.  13News Now
