ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A multi-vehicle crash on I-64 westbound in Newport News near the Harpersville Road overpass on Thursday afternoon caused heavy traffic delays as emergency crews closed the left lane and shoulder—officials say the number of vehicles involved and any injuries remain unknown.  13News Now

CRIME NEWS

  • U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents at the Port of Virginia recovered stolen vehicles from a shipping container on Thursday—this seizure included a Lincoln and newer models valued at over $150,000, adding to more than $6.5 million in vehicles intercepted this fiscal year while also uncovering guns and contraband linked to criminal networks targeting rental and dealership cars.  13News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Old Dominion University’s Center for Educational Innovation — Opportunity is putting the finishing touches on four new lab schools in Hampton Roads that focus on teaching math and science skills. One lab school, the STEM Academy at Booker T. Washington Elementary School, will serve younger students chosen by lottery.  WTKR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • RNC Chairman Michael Whatley said the GOP will work hard in Virginia to help Winsome Earle-Sears win the governor race as Election Day nears. He said the party will recruit volunteers for phone calls, door knocking, and vote protection — steps designed to connect local issues like jobs and safety to the campaign.  WAVY
  • Residents of Newport News, Hampton and Franklin can no longer take free trips through the downtown and midtown tunnels after Gov. Youngkin signed budget amendments last May—drivers earning less than $65,000 may instead sign up for 14 trips weekly at half the toll rate at an E-ZPass center. State officials noted that more than 20,000 drivers have already joined the program.  WAVY
  • Former resident Zachary Montanaro from Chesapeake said his family in military housing on Pecan Crescent faced severe issues in March 2024, from cockroaches on move-in day to asbestos findings & a collapsed ceiling. Liberty manages 20 communities in Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake & Portsmouth, and Rep. Jen Kiggans is checking with the company as Montanaro’s group helps families with complaints.  WAVY

HEALTH NEWS

  • Sentara Health, Virginia Commonwealth University and Inova are recruiting participants for the Vanguard Study, which tests a new blood test that may screen up to 10 cancers at an early stage. The study enrolls adults aged 45 to 75 with no active cancer diagnosis in Hampton Roads and Charlottesville — participants will receive a gift card and have their blood drawn again one year later.  WAVY
