A 21-year-old man died late Sunday when his 2010 Chrysler Sebring veered off I-64 near Oyster Point Road in Newport News, hit an excavator in an inactive construction zone, and was engulfed in flames.
A public safety committee—made up of the sheriff, police chief, and council members—has asked City Council to review plans for a new jail along with a new courthouse because the old jail is over 50 years old and holds 500 inmates, which is 200 above capacity; planning will begin if it is approved.
Long-term lane closures near Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport began Monday when drivers on Hampton Highway were detoured via Victory Boulevard for bridge work that will last until late next year—closures on Victory Boulevard, including an eastbound detour via Yorktown Road, are expected to end this summer.
