- ➤ Since Memorial Day, nine children under five drowned in pools across Virginia; the latest incident happened over the weekend in Tidewater—Virginia Department of Health officials warn that even two inches of water can be fatal if children are unsupervised. WAVY

- ➤ Retail Catalyst is a new program that will help entrepreneurs in specific areas of Portsmouth, Norfolk, Newport News and Hampton by offering loans from a $500,000 pool, with individual loans up to $35,000—partners include a local credit union, small business developers and retail organizations. The program will also provide business coaching and a 14-week certificate course to help expand or launch new businesses. WAVY

- ➤ Newport News police say a woman died following a shooting on Aqua Vista Drive Wednesday night after officers responded at 9:26 p.m.—they found her with a life-threatening gunshot wound and she was taken to a local hospital where she later died—the investigation is ongoing with no suspect details available. - ➤ Hampton Roads Transit completed its smart bus stop project that began in 2020 by installing over 2,600 stops with QR codes that show real-time bus information + allow riders to send alerts for trash and safety issues. The new stops now help riders plan their bus trips better across the region. WAVY
- ➤ Newport News City Council invested $4 million to transform the airport into an Air Commerce Park—shifting its focus from commercial flights to emerging fields like air manufacturing, eVTOL, logistics, and aerospace research while retaining dozens of current jobs. Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine secured $6 million in federal funds to rebuild 6,500 feet of taxiways as part of the project. 13News Now
- ➤ Sheriff Gabe Morgan said Newport News City Jail is overcrowded and in need of many repairs after seven inmates left their cells this month—he has urged city leaders to plan a new jail as part of a court complex master plan that will launch this fall. WTKR
- ➤ Newport News City Council announced Wednesday that the airport will receive $4 million to help turn it into an Air Commerce Park—$3 million for essential operations and $1 million for strategic projects.
