CRIME NEWS

  • Hampton police arrested 19-year-old Izayah Jeanty and 18-year-old Antonette Jefferson for their roles in an April shooting near Topping Lane and Old Big Bethel Road after Newport News man Jayland Kelley was shot and later died on April 18.  13News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Virginia Peninsula Community College will break ground next month at 9:30 a.m. on August 12 at 520 21st Street in downtown Newport News on a new 16,000-square-foot center that will train over 400 students annually in maritime and construction careers such as welding, HVAC, plumbing and marine electrical trades — the project aims to boost workforce opportunities in an underserved neighborhood.  13News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Adm. Daryl Caudle testified Thursday before the Senate Armed Services Committee as part of his confirmation to become the next Chief of Naval Operations. He said production of Virginia class submarines must double at Huntington Ingalls and Newport News Shipbuilding to honor the AUKUS pact with Australia + he promised to submit a 30-year shipbuilding plan to Congress in the Pentagon budget.  WAVY
