Newport News police arrested Tony Tynes on May 20 and Marvin Redding on August 12 for their roles in the shooting that killed 32-year-old Dreshaun Pruden on May 17—using surveillance footage and Crime Line tips to connect the case.

5 in Delaware and extradited to Newport News where he is accused of murdering Dreshaun Pruden inside a convenience store on May 17 — he faces first-degree murder, grand larceny, robbery and firearm-related charges with a hearing set for Sept. 5.

Virginia Peninsula Community College is building a $9 million trades center in Newport News to train more than 400 students in maritime and construction jobs to address a local workforce shortage — it is located blocks from Newport News Shipbuilding and funded by VPCC, the Maritime Industrial Base, and the city. Construction will be complete by February 2026 and training programs will start within six months of the center opening.

The CBO report warns that new federal work requirements under Public Law 119-21 may cost over 2 million Americans their SNAP benefits each month—parents with children 14 and older must work 80 hours monthly to keep their aid.

In Hampton Roads, families relying on SNAP could be affected as these changes shift assistance away from lower-income households beginning in 2026.

Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility plans to cut its workforce by 7% and offers up to $50,000 in severance pay for those who voluntarily resign by Aug.

The Newport News City Council unanimously passed new ordinances to address neighborhood blight by targeting derelict buildings, unsafe structures and cluttered lots.

The unsafe structures rule went into effect on Aug. 12—other measures will start on Oct. 1 and a rental inspection district will begin on Jan. 1, 2026 as the city works to hold property owners accountable.
