Newport News reported a 13% drop in crime over the past year with 36 fewer gun violence incidents from January 1 to August 14 — officials credit community safety programs like the CARES team, which pairs paramedics with mental health professionals for nonviolent calls and will begin escorting children to school on August 25 while investigations continue into last September’s two teen murders.
