  • Gary LeBlanc, who grew up in New Orleans and now runs Mercy Chefs, remembered how Hurricane Katrina hurt his hometown and spurred him to start his nonprofit to feed people in need. He thanked local volunteers in Hampton Roads and said his team will work to provide chef-made meals during future storms—restoring hope and dignity.  WTKR
  • Lydell and Kellie Decquir, a Portsmouth couple, recalled taking refuge in an attic with their family when Hurricane Katrina flooded their New Orleans home. They waited four to five days for rescue crews who arrived via helicopter and a motorized boat—and the couple later moved to Hampton Roads.  WTKR

CRIME NEWS

  • CBP officers arrested 49-year-old Fard Shaheed Matthews at the Norfolk cruise terminal today on felony forcible rape and sexual battery charges—he was then turned over to Norfolk police for processing.  13News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Langley Air Force Base is kept ready by the 633d Civil Engineer Squadron—teams that watch over construction, fix roads, protect the environment, and handle emergencies to keep the base safe for airmen. The squadron also checks for fire hazards and deals with bomb threats to support base operations.  WTKR

HEALTH NEWS

  • Mary Brown is hosting a golf tournament on Friday, September 5 at Ford’s Colony Country Club to raise $30,000 for Faith Recovery after her son Ryan Taylor died of an overdose in 2019—entries are open until just before the event.  WTKR
