CRIME NEWS

  • Norfolk and Virginia Beach SPCAs responded to a hoarding case in Giles County that left nearly 200 dogs in severe neglect—after rescuers moved around 130 dogs off the property, the agencies took in roughly 20 dogs to begin care this afternoon.  13News Now

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A new study from William and Mary’s Batten School of Coastal Marine Sciences and the Virginia Institute of Marine Science shows Chesapeake Bay’s eelgrass is shrinking while widgeon grass is expanding—changes that may alter the Bay’s food web. The study warns that this shift could cut invertebrate biomass by up to 63 percent by 2060 and influence future restoration efforts.  13News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Glenn Youngkin ordered that the POW/MIA flag be flown at full staff on all state buildings today in honor of National POW/MIA Recognition Day—this order remembers the sacrifice of service members who were prisoners of war or are missing in action.  13News Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • Doctors in Hampton Roads are switching to a direct pay system that cuts costs by letting patients pay directly instead of using insurance—seven local providers, including one in Newport News, have already adopted this model. They expect more patients to join as new Medicaid changes affect costs in January.  13News Now
