Good morning, Newport News. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 9th of October.

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Starting November 5, Newport News Public Schools will ban cell phone use from the start to the end of school day, including lunch and transition times, to follow state law and reduce distractions. High school students will not use their phones during lunch while exceptions apply for emergencies — repeated violations will result in warnings or disciplinary action under the student code of conduct.  Newport News Public Schools
  • High school students are encouraged to register for a barcode and attend the 40th Annual Regional College Fair, which will be held at the Hampton Roads Convention Center (Exhibit Hall C) on October 29 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.  Newport News Public Schools

HEALTH NEWS

  • The CDC now advises Newport News residents to talk with a doctor before getting a COVID-19 vaccine instead of following a blanket recommendation, after a new panel of vaccine advisers was appointed by US Health Secretary Robert Kennedy Jr. Local health experts say that people 65 and older remain at high risk — and the new policy may create delays for those who need the shot.  WTKR
