Newport News Public Schools held a pop-up food pantry at Passage Middle School on October 21 with the Dreams of Hope Foundation and the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank to help local families—especially military-connected ones hurt by the government shutdown.

NNPS Family and Community Engagement led the event that served 172 families with free food items like fruits, vegetables, and canned goods.

The Beazley Foundation awarded a $200,000 grant to Scouting America Tidewater Council to support the Fred Beazley Aquatics Center at Camp Lions on Pipsico Scout Reservation in Surry County—$100,000 was paid in May and another will be paid in May to update the facility with accessible showers and individual changing areas for youth. The new center will help provide safer and more inclusive facilities as participation grows.
