🎓 Education
Katherine G. Johnson Elementary and Ella Fitzgerald Middle School were honored with Purple Star awards from the Virginia Department of Education in October for their support of military-connected students.
Katherine received the 2nd Award while Ella earned the 1st Award (recognition lasts for three school years) and both join General Stanford Elementary (awarded last year) as NNPS communities committed to military families.
🏛️ Government
Local economists warn that the government shutdown is driving up unemployment in Hampton Roads and hitting Black workers the hardest.
Data from August show Black workers face a 7.5% unemployment rate compared to 3.7%, which may lead to broader economic challenges—reducing consumer spending and affecting municipal revenue.

Local, state and federal leaders held a ribbon-cutting ceremony yesterday for Shipyard Flats on Washington Avenue in downtown Newport News.
The $24.5M project offers studio, one bedroom and two bedroom apartments with modern amenities — including internet and a gym — and supports the mayor's plan to boost affordable housing.

Norfolk State head coach Michael Vick has changed his coaching staff ahead of the homecoming opener as the Spartans try to end a five-game losing streak.
The team will face reigning MEAC champion South Carolina State tomorrow at 2 p.m. at William Dick Price Stadium — a critical step to reset their season.
