CULTURE NEWS

  • Virginia Symphony Orchestra announced its 2025-26 season — marking its 105th year — with intimate concerts and themed shows inspired by films such as Princess Bride, Star Wars, and Harry Potter. The schedule includes events starting in September at local venues and will bring a fresh take on live orchestral performances to the region.  13News Now

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Meteorologist Taylor explained that even though spring days feel warm, the ocean water in our area stays cold, posing risks for beachgoers. The Coast Guard and National Weather Service run a Cold Water Program to issue alerts until the water warms in May—when it is expected to rise from the 60s to the upper 70s by mid-summer.  13News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Virginia senators and delegates sent a bipartisan letter to the USDA asking for answers after cuts to TEFAP—key funding that provided 20% of food to local food banks—left low-income families at risk. Local food banks reported that pantry visits increased by more than 20% and costs rose five times since 2019 as officials work with other pantries to cover shortages.  13News Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Norfolk Health Department said syphilis cases rose across Hampton Roads in 2024, with half of 35 congenital syphilis cases statewide in our area — putting pregnant women and newborns at risk. A Regional Stop Syphilis Public Launch Event is scheduled for April 29 at Old Dominion University from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.  WTKR
