ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A man passed out and died while working at a Newport News shipyard on April 11; emergency crews responded and attempted CPR but did not succeed while early indications do not suggest an industrial accident.  WTKR

CRIME NEWS

  • Newport News police are looking for 14-year-old Elijah Chandler who went missing at about 6:30 a.m. Monday when he left a home on Hertzler Road riding his red bicycle. He is described as a Black teen with ear-length dreadlocks, 5'5 tall, wearing all-black clothes and white Air Force One Nike shoes and carrying a backpack marked with Hurricane HRH and Syncere Faith—officials ask anyone with information to call 757-247-2500.  13News Now
  • A new report from Newport News shows that 234 homicides took place since 2017 with 21% linked to domestic violence, and law enforcement and community partners—supported by Commonwealth’s Attorney Howard Gwynn—plan to boost training, gun safety education and victim support to cut these deaths.  WTKR

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Hampton Jazz and Music Festival will be held at the Hampton Coliseum from June 27 to 29 and will feature top performers like Patti LaBelle, SWV, Anthony Hamilton, and Gladys Knight. Tickets will go on sale April 18 at 10 a.m.  13News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Virginia students and families gained a new free tool Monday, April 14 when the Financial Aid Help Desk launched to help complete the FAFSA. State officials said the SCHEV Level Up initiative aims to remove barriers to college funding—boosting access and college readiness.  WAVY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rep. Bobby Scott hosted a town hall meeting at Gethsemane Baptist Church Monday night to talk about cutting funds for education, nutrition and child care programs. Local residents shared their worries while the congressman introduced a plan to raise the minimum wage to $17 an hour by 2030.  WTKR

HEALTH NEWS

  • New data from the Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association shows an 11% increase in discharged hospital patients diagnosed with drug use disorder from 2020 to 2024. Among the top 10 localities, Newport News accounted for 3.2% of these patients, many of whom also had co-occurring mental health conditions.  WAVY
