BUSINESS NEWS

  • Hampton Roads-based Tidal Flight will invest $538K to expand its Chesapeake operations at Chesapeake Regional Airport to develop a hybrid-electric seaplane that cuts fuel use and noise. The project will add six jobs and is backed by state funding for cleaner coastal travel.  WTKR

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Nearly 350+ students from over 40+ universities are racing electric and autonomous boats in Hampton Roads this week as part of an Office of Naval Research program that trains future naval workers. The public is invited to watch the competition, which runs through April 16.  13News Now

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Virginia State Parks are hosting Earth Week events focused on conservation, including beach cleanups and craft workshops. Volunteers can join local initiatives at False Cape, First Landing, and Machicomoco State Parks from April 16 through 26.  13News Now
  • Dry conditions have left Norfolk with just over half an inch of rain recorded so far and could make this April one of the driest on record. Rain is forecast later this week (offering some hope) to ease drought stress along Hampton Roads.  13News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The USDA has declared several localities near Hampton Roads (Brunswick, Greensville, and Southampton) as drought disaster areas, allowing farmers to apply for emergency FSA loans within eight months of the April 14 designation. Updated drought conditions are expected to be released Thursday.  13News Now
  • Virginia’s general fund revenues are 3.2% ahead of forecast for the first nine months as a 14.3% rise in March and strong sales + individual tax collections offset weaker corporate receipts; Gov. Spanberger warned that a softer job market and rising gas prices point to broader economic concerns.  13News Now

  • Local health experts report that high tree pollen is causing seasonal allergies with symptoms including fatigue, headaches and trouble sleeping. Dr. Robin Anderson at Sentara advises residents to try over-the-counter treatments and seek medical care if symptoms worsen (consult your doctor if needed).  13News Now
