CRIME NEWS

  • Newport News police arrested 25-year-old Derrick Ellis Jr.—the suspect in a stolen vehicle investigation linked to a carjacking and robbery on Nettles Drive after shots were fired at officers and a nearby home, with no injuries reported.  13News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Newport News Public Schools students, teachers and staff began classes on August 25 with community groups welcoming them. Superintendent Michele Mitchell visited several schools—such as Heritage and Huntington—to greet everyone and support the start of the new school year.  Newport News Public Schools
  • Students in Newport News and other Hampton Roads schools returned on Monday with stronger security measures and a new cell phone ban from the Bell-to-Bell law. School officials said extra training+ partnerships with local law enforcement will help keep the learning environment safe.  13News Now
  • Today, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children launched the animated series Into the Cloud to teach elementary students about the risks of AI-generated content—like deep fakes and digital forgery—that may cause harm. The center offers downloadable presentations with talking points to help parents and teachers discuss online safety.  WTKR

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health leaders say syphilis is rising in Virginia as young women and pregnant women face increased risks—18 infants have been diagnosed with congenital syphilis so far in 2025. The Virginia Department of Health reported over 800 early cases and warns that symptoms can be hard to notice.  13News Now
